‘This Is Us’ Is Tragedy Porn For A World That’s Already Tragic Enough

This Is Us is a huge success but I’m hard-pressed to figure out why. As I explain on Decider, it’s total tragedy porn and I’m not feeling it.

One of the biggest problems with This Is Us is that it constantly undermines its audience’s intelligence by assuming that if they throw unbridled devastation our way week after week, surely we won’t realize that below the surface, there’s not much there. Adversity is only touching if you care about the people going through it; calamity is only devastating if it’s unexpected. Viewers seem to turn into this show weekly expecting that the world is going to fall apart in some new way and they’re downright disappointed if it doesn’t. Where’s the pleasure in that?
